MA International Studies

It demonstrates that you can operate at a high academic level, that you have excellent communication skills and a commitment to learning

I have always been interested in international issues, particularly those relating to development and the environment, and I was keen to pursue a career in the not‐for‐profit sector.

I felt the MA would give me a good academic background from which to start down a new career path. It demonstrates that you can operate at a high academic level, that you have excellent communication skills and a commitment to learning. I think all of those are attractive to employers and will continue to be as your career progresses.

Eventually, I would love to work for an international development charity or a think tank, but I enjoyed the MA so much that I may well take my education further.

The course has broad base and offers some really interesting specialist module options after covering IR as a subject generally. Also, the high number of foreign students taking the MA meant you got a great diversity of perspectives on issues such as the Balkan wars. As unusual as it may sound, I really enjoyed researching and writing my dissertation. It gave me the chance to explore a subject area in great depth as well as the opportunity to communicate my own ideas and thoughts. My dissertation supervisor, was particularly helpful and encouraging, and our class as a whole was always very supportive.

I gained far more than I expected from doing the MA at Brookes. The sense of personal achievement has made all the hard work worthwhile.
