Julia Hanne, originally from Germany, completed her first degree in The Netherlands, specialising in cross‐cultural research and sustainable development. Julia is studying for the MA in International Studies.

I was attracted to the course at Brookes because of its interdisciplinary approach, providing theoretical grounding in economy, social sciences and international relations. I was particularly interested in the modules in development and South East Asia. I like the fact that it’s possible to choose such a diversity of fields which offers you the opportunity to design your own pathway.

The wide variety of modules available in the second semester allows for specialisation, and the course attracts students from all ages and nationalities. This adds a lot of value to the course as everyone can contribute their own very distinct experiences and opinions.

This is a very well organised and structured programme with help and support offered at all times. The staff all have great academic backgrounds and yet are really approachable, and are always willing to provide relevant feedback.

As well as being personally interested in this area of study, the course broadens my academic scope. In terms of my future career I think the combination of political and economic topics will be very useful.

I like the fact that Oxford is a real student city with lots of lovely cafés and bars, and it’s not too big yet very close to London and other cities like Bristol or Birmingham. It’s also a really international city due to all the people coming here to study, and it also feels very safe. Being in one of the most historic places in the UK it is altogether very inspiring.
