Courtney Smart is a current Geography undergraduate at Oxford Brookes. Having lived abroad as a child and travelled during her gap year, she developed a curiosity about different cultures and environments.

During my experiences of travelling to Mongolia and China I became increasingly aware of the different cultures and environments surrounding us as a civilisation. I wanted to learn more about our environment and its processes.

I have found the course to be an amazing learning experience. The modules are extremely diverse, ranging from ancient civilisations to desert environments.

During my time at Brookes I have gained multiple communication skills which have given me the confidence to approach new things, something which will stand me in good stead in the future.

Through the whole university experience I have a better understanding about the way the world works, and hope to take the skills I’ve acquired into something I enjoy and feel passionate about.

I chose to come to Brookes after hearing it was a great university, and the lecturers I met on the Open Day were really helpful and enthusiastic. Oxford is a wonderful place to study, surrounded by so much history.

I was a member of the Watersports Society, which was great fun; weekly wakeboarding outings, trying a new sport and meeting new people. I’ve been able to enjoy the best of both worlds ‐ Brookes, and being in Oxford.
