Gipsy Lane works from 13 September 2013

What's happening on site


  • The façade of the Colonnade is almost complete, including the shop front windows
  • Paving on the piazza entrance will begin in the next few weeks
  • The granite flooring throughout the building has been laid, with only the Forum remaining
  • Lighting is active in many areas of the Library and pooled teaching area
  • The specialist projection equipment has been installed in the lecture theatre and Union Hall
  • Joinery finishes (e.g. counter tops, wall panels) are being installed within the Library
  • The Colonnade's feature corten steel ribbon façade is expected to arrive on site in the next few weeks
  • Scaffolding has been completed removed throughout the Forum, revealing its full scale

What you need to know



  • Pedestrian access from Headington Road to the International Centre, Tonge and Sports Centre has changed
  • A new footpath providing access to these buildings is signposted
  • Access to the Media Centre is provided by a dedicated path
  • The temporary path at the rear of the International Centre and Tonge remains in use
  • Deliveries to the Print Room, International Centre and Tonge will need to be arranged in advance - please contact for further info 


Gibbs and John Payne


  • Ground work behind Gibbs has completed, and paving will take place next week
  • This may cause some minor noise to nearby building users from trimming of stone slabs
  • Please take care when using the pedestrian crossing in this area and listen carefully to instructions from construction staff


Buckley and Abercrombie


  • A mobile crane has been erected on the site of the piazza and will create background engine noise throughout the rest of the summer
  • When paving work begins in September, trimming of stone may cause some erratic disruption from hand tool use




  • The remainder of works in this area should be low impact on nearby building users as paving and landscaping is completed


International Centre and Tonge


  • A hand rail is to be installed to the stairs next to the newly paved slope 
  • Access to the International Centre from Headington Road is via a new advertised route as detailed above
  • Ground works will continue in the areas in front and to the side of the International Centre
  • This work is expected to cause disruption to building users through September and will be followed by paving works
  • The building entrance has been reduced to a single door but access will be maintained at all times, occasionally managed by construction staff
  • A new path accessing the International Centre and the Tonge Lab from both the North and the South is set to open next week.


Media Centre


  • Access to the Media Centre is now provided by a dedicated path and occasionally managed by construction staff during concrete breaking
  • This may cause minor delays to users wanting to exit or enter the building
  • Reduced concrete breaking work may continue into the middle of next week and cause severe disruption to building users
  • Access from the Media Centre on to the International Centre or Tonge building is via the new path as detailed above
