Bursaries for Art and Design Foundation students

We offer the following financial support options for Art and Design Foundation students:

16-18 Bursary

Foundation Diploma in Art and Design

Help towards study and material costs for financially disadvantaged students.

To be eligible for the 16-18 Bursary Fund, students must be:

  • Considered to have Home fee status
  • Be living in the UK on the first day of the course
  • Enrolled on the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design
  • Aged 16, 17 or 18 on the first day of the course

The 16-18 Bursary Fund is provided by the Government, via the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). Applications can be considered under the following category:

Discretionary Bursaries

These are paid to students who can demonstrate financial need. The assessment is based on household income and the amount awarded varies on this basis. Students with a household income over £35,000 per year are not eligible to apply for a Discretionary Bursary.

The Discretionary Bursary helps with specific costs that you incur during your studies including:

  • Studio fees (£150)
  • Study trip (approximately £500)
  • Travel costs (students have to provide evidence of one weekly travel card purchase)
  • Art materials (max £150)

Students may also be able to apply for support with domestic and one-off emergencies e.g. redundancy or bereavement.

How to apply

Please note, the 2021-22 application cycle has now closed; we are no longer accepting new applications for this academic year.

  • Applicants will receive a decision by email within 4 weeks of receiving completed applications and supporting documents.
  • Applications can only be considered where household income is less than £35,000 per year and evidence of financial hardship can be demonstrated.
  • Supporting evidence is needed to fully assess the application and to determine the level of support available.
  • Applications will be considered by the University’s Financial Aid Committee.

Receiving payment

  • Successful applicants must be enrolled on the course in order to receive payment.

Advanced Learner Loan Bursary 19+

Foundation Diploma in Art and Design

Help for vulnerable and disadvantaged loan-funded students, to overcome costs associated with study which may prevent them from taking part in or continuing in learning.

To be eligible, all of the following must apply. You must be:

  • Studying on the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course
  • Aged 19 or over on the first day of the course
  • Living in the UK on the first day of your course
  • A UK national or have ‘settled status’ (this means there are no restrictions on how long you can stay)
  • Living in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for 3 years before starting your course.

The 19+ Advanced Learner Loan Bursary Fund is provided by the Government, via the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). Applications can be considered under the following categories:

Hardship support

This provides assistance for specific costs that you incur during your studies including:

  • Course-related costs
  • Travel costs (students have to provide evidence of one weekly travel card purchase)
  • Support with domestic and one-off emergency such as e.g. redundancy, bereavement, debt management

20+ Childcare

This provides a contribution to Ofsted-registered childcare costs for students aged 20 or more.

How to apply

  • Applicants will receive a decision by email within 4 weeks of receiving completed applications and supporting documents.
  • For students applying for childcare, we will provide the form which needs to be completed by your childcare provider
  • Applications can only be considered where household income is less than £35,000 per year and evidence of financial hardship can be demonstrated.
  • Supporting evidence is needed to fully assess the application and to determine the level of support available.
  • Applications will be considered by the University’s Financial Aid Committee.
  • Applications will be accepted until 1 June 2022.

Receiving payment

  • Successful applicants must be enrolled on the course in order to receive payment.
  • Payment will be made in two equal instalments if the application is successful.
