What's the competition about?

  • Celebrating your business ideas

    The university is holding a competition to celebrate your business ideas. There are two prizes of £1,000, one each for the undergraduate and postgraduate winners of the competition and a total of four runners up prizes of £500.

    • Create your plan around a business idea that you really want to implement
    • Use our workshops and mentoring advice to guide your ideas and gain new skills.

    Enter in one of two categories

    Undergraduate

    • Entrants in this category must be current students at Oxford Brookes on the closing date, Monday 6 March 2017, and may be studying for a Foundation or Honours degree

    Postgraduate/Alumni

    • Entrants will either be current postgraduate students at Oxford Brookes on the closing date, Monday 6 March 2017, or alumni who have been awarded an Oxford Brookes degree or postgraduate qualification within the past 2 years

    University Relationship Branch Manager, Simon Poulter of Santander UK, is one of our experts on the judging panel for The Business Plan Competition.

    Claire E Lawrey, Tax Manager for Grant Thornton UK LLP will be part of our judging panel for the first time in 2017.

    Judging criteria

    The judges will consider:

    • The originality of the idea and the vision
    • The analysis of the market and the competition
    • The operational, delivery and management plans
    • The projected financial performance

    The best plans will be considered for entry into other national business plan competitions such as the Santander Business Plan competition where the winners could win up to £20,000 to help turn their idea into a reality. If selected you must be available to represent Oxford Brookes and will receive mentoring support throughout the process from Olympic gold medallist rower Tim Foster, MBE.  Please read the pdf below for key dates and information.

    For 2017 the Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Awards includes

    • A prize pool worth over £100,000 which will include equity-free seed funding, mentoring, access to talent and more
    • Prizes from Talent Cupboard ( that will support the winning businesses to maximise their digital potential
    • A series of regional heats with prizes and support up for grabs
    • An invite to an acceleration week, which will include input from leading businesses and inspirational speakers,
    • A high profile final in London that will see up to 12 businesses compete for prizes

    Winners in The Business Plan Competition at Oxford Brookes will receive

    • £1,000
    • individual support and guidance to improve and implement their plans
    • a high-level of mentoring to enhance their chances of winning a national competition – with additional funding.
