  • Tier 4 application in the UK

Check the bullet points below to see if you can apply in the UK. If you can then use the boxes below to help you prepare your application. If you have any questions contact us

When you receive your CAS, please check it carefully to make sure the information is correct. If your course has a placement option, please check the course length on your CAS carefully. Our webpage gives more information on how to do this.

  • Can I apply for a Tier 4 student visa in the UK?

    • Changes to the immigration rules in April 2016 mean that you will not be able to apply to extend your visa in the UK to complete your current course unless you meet one of the UKVI exemptions. For example, you will be able to apply in the UK to do retakes or to continue a PhD but you will not be able to apply in the UK to extend your dissertation. From January 2018, you can now extend to add a placement or a study abroad period. Check with ISAT for details.
    • If you are changing courses at Brookes and you need more time to complete your new course then you will need to apply for a new visa from your home country before starting the course.
    • If you can apply in the UK, you must have completed and paid for your visa application before enrolling on your course (or within 6 weeks of enrolling if you are already a Brookes Tier 4 student).
    •  The Home Office will refuse a visa application if you apply after your visa has ended. The only exception to this is if there are circumstances beyond your control such as being admitted to hospital for emergency treatment or a close family bereavement and the application is made within 14 days of your visa ending.
    • You cannot normally spend more than 5 years in the UK on a Tier 4 visa at degree level and you cannot normally spend more than than 2 years studying below degree level. We will assess this when you apply for a CAS. More details (UKCISA).
    • If you are applying to start a new course then the new course must normally be at a higher level. We will assess this when you apply for a CAS.
    • You cannot apply for a Tier 4 student visa in the UK if you are applying for a new course and your new course starts more than 28 days after your current visa ends. (If your new course is less than 6 months and is not a pre-sessional course you may not be able to apply if this course starts more than 7 days after your current visa ends.)
    • If you are applying for a Tier 4 student visa to start a new course, you cannot apply more than 3 months before the start of your new course.
    • You cannot apply for a Tier 4 student visa in the UK if you currently have a visitor or short-term student visa. If you have a different type of visa check with ISAT.
    • If you currently have a Tier 4 (General) visa, then to apply in the UK to extend your visa to come to do a course at Brookes, your current institution must be a higher education institution, an embedded college or an independent school. If you do not know if this applies to you then you will need to ask your current Tier 4 sponsor.
