Come along to the launch event to find out how you can get involved

They’re cute, they’re prickly, and they’re in trouble.

Your local hedgehogs need your help. Hedgehogs are known as the nation’s favourite animal but numbers in Britain have been declining rapidly; since 2000 urban hedgehogs numbers are down by 30%, rural hedgehog numbers by a staggering 50%. British hedgehogs are now officially classified as vulnerable to extinction. Help us turn the tide, right here on campus!

Hedgehog Friendly Campus

In September 2020, Brookes Hedgehog Champion Tatiana Iseborn signed Brookes up to become a Hedgehog Friendly Campus; a small working group, including representatives from Brookes Union, the Sustainability Team and the Grounds Team, has come together to help progress this initiative but we need many more staff and students to get involved!

The Hedgehog Friendly Campus initiative (HFC) aims to help hedgehogs to thrive on University campuses. Teams of staff and students can participate regardless of department or level of knowledge or ability; there is something for everyone to take part in and make real changes.

The aim is to achieve different HFC award levels; bronze, silver and gold. Our first aim is to achieve the bronze award by December 2021. Due to the pandemic most practical actions will be planned to take place from September.

Launch event

Join us for our online launch event on Tuesday 9 March from 12noon - 1.00pm to learn more about our wonderful hedgehogs, which threats are they up against and how can you help by joining the Brookes Hedgehog Friendly Campus group.

At this event we will be joined by Jo Wilkinson from Hedgehog Friendly Campus and Hugh Warwick - author, ecologist, spokesperson for the BHPS and Visiting Fellow here at Oxford Brookes.

Please register for the event on this webpage. We will send a one-off email after the event to everyone who signed up with the event recording and sign-up form for our Hedgehog Friendly Campus group; so please register for the event even if you can’t make it on the day.
