  • Study skills

Our tutors offer confidential tutorials on all aspects of study skills at all levels from foundation to PhD. For example, we can help you to develop skills in planning and structuring your assignments, find your academic voice, improve your referencing, focus your dissertation, or manage your time. We do not offer proofreading, but we can help you to develop the ability to be critical of your own work and improve your writing.

You can see an Upgrade tutor in-person at Headington, Harcourt Hill, Marston Road or Swindon by prior appointment (see our opening times page for details of when we are visiting each campus). Most people come on their own but Upgrade tutors are also happy to run group sessions at the request of either staff or students. Appointments usually last between 30 and 40 minutes.

In semester time, we offer daily drop-ins for study skills queries from 12 to 1 pm at the Headington Campus. Just turn up at our desk and someone will see you.

Study skills tutorials are free, friendly and confidential so call or email us for an appointment.

    Frequently asked questions

  • No worries - there is no query too small. Many people have gaps in their past education, or come from different education systems and asking for advice is absolutely OK.
No, we don't correct your work for you, but we will look at it with you and advise you on how to improve it.
Yes, definitely, and we often do. We may be able to highlight areas for improvement, and help you see what your subject tutors are looking for.
Of course. We see lots of postgraduate students. There is a lot to take on board in postgraduate study, especially if you come from a working background, or from another country.
No. Upgrade is confidential. We collect information about users of Upgrade in the form of stats, and generalised patterns and trends (which is why we ask for your details), and feed this data back to staff, but you cannot be identified individually.
