Rev'd Dr. Robert Bates is the resident chaplain at the Harcourt Hill Campus and the Methodist Chaplain for Oxford Brookes University.
Robert also teaches for both the Department of History/Philosophy/Religion (courses in theology and church history) and for the School of Education (as a member of the Primary English team).
Before being ordained, Robert was a primary school teacher and headteacher, with particular interests in young children's writing development and children's literature. Within theology he is especially interested in the German churches in the twentieth century and with a special focus on the life and theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Before coming to Oxford, Robert was also a hospice chaplain and he now offers some voluntary chaplaincy support to the Sir Michael Sobell House Hospice in Oxford.
