Essentials of Human Nutrition

An online short course in Nutrition designed to support graduates of non-science subjects to achieve competency in the basic principles of human physiology and nutrition.

About the course

The Essentials of Human Nutrition course is a self-study/self-paced online short course designed to support graduates of non-science subjects who may need to achieve competency in the basic principles of human physiology and nutrition. The short course offers over 15 hours of lecture recordings and interactive teaching material, as well as practice quizzes, and recommended additional reading to further understanding of the topics.

The entire course package to include all three learning units costs £800.

Upon successful completion (two pass/fail multiple choice quizzes), you will receive a certificate that can be submitted to be considered against the entry criteria for enrolment* in our MSc Applied Human Nutrition course.

Oxford Brookes MSc Applied Human Nutrition course is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN).

*Successful completion of this course alone does not guarantee you an automatic enrolment onto the MSc course. Please see the full list of MSc entry requirements.

Learning units

The Essentials of Human Nutrition course is delivered across three learning units:

Unit 1 Human Physiology 

Assessed via pass/fail multiple choice quiz

Get insights into how the human body is structured and the way that it performs its vital functions.

Unit 2 Human Nutrition 

Assessed via pass/fail multiple choice quiz

Learn about the concepts of energy supply and expenditure, the different nutrients, and how to assess dietary intake and nutritional adequacy.

Unit 3 Scientific Study Skills 

Non-assessed component

Understand the basic concepts and develop essential skills to interpret and use scientific recourses, as well as to write at an appropriate academic standard.

  • Pre-recorded lectures are delivered by Oxford Brookes University academics with experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Practice quizzes support your learning and prepare you successfully for each unit-specific final multiple choice quiz; there is no limit on the number of times you can take the practice quizzes
  • You can attempt each final multiple choice quiz up to three times; pass rate is 40% and only your best score per quiz will be recorded as your final unit-specific mark
  • Upon successful completion of the short course and if fully enrolled onto our MSc Applied Human Nutrition course, the £800 fee will be offset from your tuition fees in the same academic year (scholarship)
  • Access to the short course material will be enabled for the entire period of your enrolment in our MSc Applied Human Nutrition course as study aids.
