With the illustrious history of taking the Top UK Formula Student racing team Award 7 times, Oxford Brookes Racing has stepped into the next generation of mobility with its all-new team Oxford Brookes Racing Autonomous.
OBR Autonomous was formed in 2018 with the aim to develop highly precise self-driving systems for our Formula Student race cars. At OBR Autonomous we believe in chasing excellence. Our team members possess that spark of determination, motivation and enthusiasm which makes us one of the UK’s best, student, autonomous motorsport teams.
While your studies are a top priority, you will still want to make the most of everything else student life offers. Within the school there are always projects you can work on outside of your chosen field of study, including getting involved with societies that are run out of Brookes Union.
Our staff are are at the forefront of their fields and active in research and consultancy for industry. They are ready to share their expertise and build on the excellent links the university has established in industry.
Many of our courses include the option of participating in industrial placements. Companies offering placements in the past include:
- Cisco Systems
- Culham Publications Services
- General Electric
- Higher Concept Software
- IBM Incuna
- Net Solutions
- Oxford Cryosystems
“The modules at Brookes were very relevant for employment. As a result, I managed to get a job as an IT consultant specialising in software for nature conservation; pretty much my dream job!”
We encourage you to take a supervised work placement in the computer industry in your third year of study. Placements are an excellent opportunity to:
- gain work experience
- consolidate your understanding
- apply your knowledge in a work environment.
While the sponsoring organisations do not guarantee a job, they will provide practice interviews, assessment centre experience and invaluable advice. And, they are always on the lookout for the best students.
Those who undertake a company-based work placement find that it enhances their CV and career prospects. On returning to university for your final year, the experience you have gained from your placement invariably improves your academic performance. In addition, we have an excellent record of students gaining full-time employment on graduation, often with their industrial placement year company or organisation.
It is possible to change your programme of study, up to the end of your second year, to opt in or out of the work placement option. We have a wide range of company contacts and can help you find an appropriate placement.
