Foundation degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, Solihull College and University Centre

I own several pets including a cat, geckos, a bearded dragon and a black headed caique parrot. This interest in animals led to me enrolling on a Foundation Degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Solihull College. I wasn’t sure I could commit to moving away to university, plus I’d studied at the college before and it was local to me. I also knew that Oxford Brookes University had a good reputation and the course was quite varied.

The animal care centre at the college is among the best in the country, housing a wide range of different species. It is local and easily accessible, and the teaching environment is relaxed. There are great new science labs as well as good food and entertainment facilities. The teaching has been interesting, while the practical sessions in the science labs have been really engaging. The Oxford Brookes online resources and journals have been invaluable for my assignments.

I am currently working part time in the Solihull Pets at Home store - I know how competitive the animal industry is and therefore have different options to pursue. I am interested in the teaching sector, pursuing animal technician roles, or even starting my own dog walking business. I am even considering trying to get into the veterinary field, but am focused on completing this course first!

I feel foundation degrees offer a great middle ground between college and full blown university degrees, and would advise others to get involved in open days to get a taste first hand of what is on offer.
