  • Brookes Engage is an exciting programme of free activities and events designed to help you get into university. Besides having lots of fun and making some new friends, you'll gain a lot of skills which will really help to give you the leading edge when it comes to applying for university and for jobs.

  • Such a brilliant insight of what university life is like, from attending lectures and having to do presenting to an exciting week of summer school in which we got to experience staying in the student accommodations. Full of fun activities! Definitely extremely motivating!

  • Brookes Engage is an 18 month long programme of regular activities and events designed to support you to make a successful transition to university.  The programme will also give you experiences and skills that will be beneficial in the world of work.

    In 2017-19 Brookes Engage is running the pathways in the following subject areas:

    Cohort A

    • Social Sciences
    • History
    • Law

    Cohort B

    • Healthcare
    • Mathematics
    • Art and Design
    • Sport

    The programme involves attending monthly workshops that will take place on campus at Oxford Brookes University.  You will take part in academic workshops, plus general training workshops on topics that include: Choosing the Right University for You, What Life as a Student is Really Like, Financing your Studies and Becoming an Independent and Assertive Learner. 

    You will take part in one cultural trip each year and attend a subject specific careers event. 

    You will also attend a residential summer school and undertake an independent study assignment.

    You will also be given the opportunity to be mentored by an Oxford Brookes student to support you throughout the programme.

    Brookes Engage will run from  November 2017 – July 2019. Dates will depend on the subject pathway chosen. 

    Sessions will take place once a month, generally on Wednesdays. In addition to the monthly sessions there may be occasional evening events and there is a residential summer school at the end of Year 12 in July. 

    Cohort A (Social Sciences, History and Law) and Cohort B (Healthcare, Mathematics, Art and Design, and Sport) will run on different dates.  

    The Brookes Engage programme will help you work out what it is you want to do and what you need to do to get there.  You will spend time in an academic environment improving your confidence and your ability to learn, and you will take part in a range of extra-curricular activities that will be beneficial for both university and work applications.   You will also make friends and have fun!

    As a Brookes Engage student, you will be eligible to apply for the Oxford Brookes Community Scholarship which awards students with a payment of £1,000 in their first year.

    To be eligible to apply for Brookes Engage you must meet all of the following criteria:

    • You are  in your first year of a Level 3 qualification (A Levels or BTEC)
    • You are studying at an Oxfordshire or Swindon non-selective state school or college
    • You have the potential to achieve 3 Cs in your A Levels / DMM in your BTEC (or equivalent)
    • You have 5 GCSEs A* - C including English and Maths (or you expect to have 5 GCSEs including English and Maths by July 2016)

    To be eligible to apply for Brookes Engage you also need to meet at least one of the following criteria:

    • You attend either Cheney School, St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, The Oxford Academy, Oxford Spires Academy, Wheatley Park School, Banbury Academy, North Oxfordshire Academy, Blessed George Napier, Bicester Community College, Activate Learning (City of Oxford, Banbury and Bicester Colleges), Abingdon and Witney College, Swindon College or New College.
    • You are eligible for free school meals
    • Your parent(s)/guardian(s) did not attend university
    • You live in local authority care, or you have lived in care
    • You are a young carer
    • You are disabled or have a specific learning difficulty
    • You are of black or minority ethnic origin.
