Information for parents

  • Discover Brookes is a fully funded Year 12 access programme. It is open to young people from backgrounds under-represented in higher education who are studying in the first year of a Level 3 qualification (A Level, BTEC etc).

    Students will get an insight into real University courses taught at Oxford Brookes University. They will take part in two workshops at their school, which are presented by Oxford Brookes staff. Those who participate in both workshops can apply for a free summer school at Oxford Brookes University. After the summer school, they will receive online mentoring by a current student who will support their application to and transition to university.

    At the end of the programme, participants should feel confident in making the next step in their education career and to make an informed choice about the university course that is right for them. 

    The programme is completely free of charge to participants and the residential summer school is fully funded, including travel to and from the campus.

    • Students will gain a unique insight into particular university courses they are interested in and the possible career paths linked to those courses
    • Participants will get a chance to interact and learn from current university students and to be taught by academics and staff from Oxford Brookes University
    • Students' confidence in their academic skills and knowledge of the university application process should improve
    • Students will get a deeper understanding of learning at university course level and will be in a stronger position for applying to University
    • Two free workshops in Year 12 in school, taught by Oxford Brookes staff
    • One free residential summer school in July 2018 (participants have to apply for this as places may be limited) at our campus
    • Online mentoring in Year 13 by one of our current students to help with application and transition into university
    • Support with Open Day visits
    Discover Brookes is completely free to participants. The residential summer school is fully funded and includes transport, accommodation and food.
    Once your child has taken part in both school workshops, they are can apply for the summer school. Application forms will be handed out during the first school workshops and will be available to download in spring 2018.

    To be eligible to take part in Discover Brookes pupils must meet all of the following criteria:

    • Be in the first year of a Level 3 qualification (A Levels or BTEC)
    • Have the potential to achieve 3 Cs at A Level / DMM BTEC (or equivalent)
    • Have 5 GCSEs A* - C including English and Maths (or expect to have 5 GCSEs including English and Maths by July 2018)

    To be eligible to apply for Discover Brookes pupils also need to meet at least one of the following criteria:

    • Have a history of be eligible for free school meals
    • Live in an area with low participation in Higher Education
    • Is of black or minority ethnic origin
