• The Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment (TDE) at Oxford Brookes is a leading provider of courses in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics - a subject grouping known as STEAM.

This group adds arts subjects to all the powerful STEM grouping, in recognition of the fact that design principles and creative solutions are essential to innovation and enterprise. STEAM was developed in 2006 by Georgette Yakman. Georgette was president of her state teaching organization and Teacher of the Year in 2007 with a technological business group; she has worked as an architectural designer and VP of a clothing company in the US and Ecuador.

"Innovation happens when convergent thinkers, those who march straight ahead toward their goal, combine forces with divergent thinkers – those who professionally wander, who are comfortable being uncomfortable, and who look for what is real."
John Maeda, President, Rhode Island School of Design

TDE promotes STEM and STEAM at events like our Asmolean Live Friday showcase, our annual Women in Engineering event for local schools and our student exhibitions and expos.

"We have built a learning community underpinned with an understanding that innovation comes out of our students being able to take risks in a supportive environment. We encourage experimentation, playful trial and error, and academic curiosity"
Paul Inman, Pro Vice Chancellor, Oxford Brookes University

Our students and graduates benefit from placements and employment across the sector.
