Professor Graham Butt is a member of the Leadership Team for the School of Education, with key responsibilities for leading and managing research matters for the School.  As Research Lead he has oversight of the School’s six Research Groups, chairs its Research and Consultancy Committee (R&CC), manages the annual Research Implementation Plan and controls financial matters relating to research activities, with Professor Deb McGregor. In 2017 Graham was awarded one of the first Research Excellence Awards at Oxford Brookes.

Graham’s research is predominantly in the field of geography education, although he has also published on teacher workload, modernisation of the teaching workforce and assessment - with funded research projects, as either Principal Investigator or Co Investigator, worth £965K (since 2000). He has also successfully bid for £100K from the Department for Education (DfE) to establish a Training School in Birmingham, for which he was a Director from 2000-2005. Graham has over 200 publications, including 31 academic journal articles, nine authored books, 11 edited books and 52 book chapters. Before working at Brookes Graham was Reader in Geography Education, and Deputy Head of School, at the School of Education, University of Birmingham (1990-2012).

Graham is a founding member of the Geography Education Research Collective (GEReCo) – leading, as Chair, a group of 15 research-active English academics dedicated to initiating research in geography education and influencing government education policy. He is an invited member of the UK Committee of the International Geographical Union-Commission on Geography Education (IGU-CGE), for which he is Honorary Publications Officer. Graham has been a member of the Geographical Association since 1983, serving for over a decade as Chair of its Assessment SIG.

He is currently a member of the editorial boards for the academic journals Educational Review and Oxford Review of Education, as well as for the online journals Research in Geographical Education Online (RIGEO) and Humanities.
