Yan teaches finance-related courses to both undergraduates and postgraduates. For instance, Financial Markets and Institutions, Corporate Finance, Financial Management, Financial Modelling, and International Finance. She has extensive experience in financial databases and programming in STATA.

Yan's research interests are mergers and acquisitions, empirical asset pricing and behavioural finance. She participated in conferences such as 10th Asia Business Forum and The 7th conference of the Paul Wolley Centre for the study of capital market dysfunctionality.

Yan obtained a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, a Master's degree in Finance and Investment from University of Durham and a Master's degree in Economics from University of Exeter. She gained her PhD in the area of market efficiency from the University of Exeter. She joined Oxford Brookes as a senior lecturer in finance in 2013. Before her appointment at Brookes, she was an associate research fellow in the Department of Economics at Exeter University for the project of Transparency of Food Pricing (TRANSFOP) which was a EU-wide project funded by the European Commission (2012-2013).
