Lois graduated from Leeds University, having studied Agricultural Sciences (Botany) there, and then went on to train as a chartered accountant (ICAEW) with Grant Thornton (then Thornton Baker) in their Witney office. After qualification she worked with Grant Thornton for a year implementing their computerised Taxpoint system. Lois then took a career break to work overseas in linguistics, studying and translating into a minority language in Indonesia. During one return to the UK she did further work at Grant Thornton, working in collaboration with the CCLA as an editor in the production of their first edition of the EU VAT Manual for practitioners. On settling back in the UK, Lois moved into academics, starting first as an Associate Lecturer at Oxford Brookes in 2009 before becoming a permanent member of the AFE department in 2012.
