Mary trained as a teacher of secondary English and Drama, before obtaining a PhD in English and Comparative Literature in 2006. Her thesis was called A Female Poetics of Psalmody, 1560-1660 and it traced the emergence of original poetry by women in the tradition of the biblical book of Psalms. She became a lecturer in academic writing at Coventry University, and joined Oxford Brookes in 2011 as an Educational Developer.
Mary’s duties at Brookes include teaching on the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education, supervising doctoral candidates, researching in the field of education, serving on the University’s Internationalization Steering Group, chairing the Centre for Curriculum Internationalization, and supporting academics in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Mary recently co-edited Learning and Teaching Writing Online (2015); her publications include Writing in the Disciplines (2011), Academic Research, Writing, and Referencing (2010), and Critical Thinking and Analysis (2010).
