Oxford Brookes Business School

Mary Davis

Role

I am Principal Lecturer (Education and Student Experience) in the Business School and institutional Academic Integrity Lead. I manage the Pre-Master's Diploma, Pre-Master's Certificate: English language and study skills, Pre-Master's Certificate: Study skills and the Two Year Master's programmes, which prepare students for postgraduate degrees at Brookes. I chair the Diversity & Inclusion Subcommittee and lead its working groups designed to improve teaching and learning for all students. I contribute to Task and Finish groups to improve the student experience and the GetPublished Student Conference. My wider university roles focus on academic integrity and inclusion, and also connect with staff development as a mentor, reviewer and champion of the HEA Professional Standards Pathway and contributor to the Explore programme. I have been a member of the Brookes Scholarship Group on Inclusive practice (2020-21) and Academic Advising (2021-22) and conducted research in both groups.

Teaching and supervision

Courses

Modules taught

  • Academic Writing,
  • Extended Writing Project,
  • Independent Study Module

Most of my teaching and module leadership is focused on academic writing, including preparation for longer postgraduate writing tasks with the extended writing project and the independent study module. I also teach academic integrity on Foundation and University English Pathways programmes, as well as in the induction for all undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Business School.

Supervision

I supervise Pre-Master's students on writing projects and am able to supervise PhDs in topics pertaining to academic writing and academic integrity. I supervise EdD topics related to academic literacy and the student experience.

Research

My research interests focus on learning and teaching related to academic integrity, inclusion and academic writing. I completed my PhD in Education at IOE, University of London in the development of source use by international postgraduate students. I have also been involved in a long-term research collaboration with Dr John Morley, the creator of Academic Phrasebank at the University of Manchester. We are currently researching the role and use of formulaic phrases by neurodiverse postgraduate students. My recent research involves focusing on inclusive practice and the use of Universal Design for Learning principles in academic integrity to ensure that all students have opportunities to learn and develop good academic practice.

Research impact

My research is widely read and cited. I have at least 250 citations to my work and over 9,000 reads (ResearchGate). I contribute to high level journals within my field of academic integrity, such as the International Journal for Educational Integrity (2 year impact factor =4.6)
