Nicola graduated with a BA Hons in Business Management and Geography from Oxford Brookes in 2017, and is now interning in the HSS Marketing department. In her own words, she explains how she benefited from her time at Brookes.
I decided to combine Business with Geography as both relate to real world issues. One helps you understand globalisation and the other shows you how businesses have to adapt. Also, Geography has exciting field-trips – I went to Malta with my course mates!
Brookes has a flexible modular approach which allows you to shape your own degree. As a combined honours student I could choose whether I wanted to major or minor in Business or Geography. I could also choose whether to do a dissertation or not. In the end, I decided to do a dissertation and to keep my degree as joint honours (half-and-half) as I felt this was more rounded and would keep me most interested.
Highlights for me included “Environmental Hazard Management”, “Geographical Information System” and “Business and Management Synoptic” modules. My lecturers went above and beyond to ensure that combined students had a good experience by accommodating the different needs we had compared to those doing single honours. Additionally, the field trip to Malta was free and a great opportunity to apply our skills and experience geography abroad!

Oxford has a large homeless community, and as I specialised in human geography I was keen to write a dissertation that was relevant to the city in which I lived. I got the idea from an article in National Geographic that highlighted the amount of global food waste and the ways in which it can be reduced. I was interested to research how this was implemented, and the potential impact it had on the local community. My dissertation supervisor provided very useful feedback to help me develop my work.It was a rich and rewarding experience and I am really pleased I did it. Consequently it has made me more conscious to minimise my own waste.
