Overview

Oxford Brookes University has partnered with the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation (CSF) to support three students as part of the Foundation's broader mission to increase higher education access for 100 Black British students over the next decade.

The award

  • This scholarship will be available for academic year 2026/7 and 2029/30, please check back in September 2025 to complete the application form.
  • Oxford Brookes and the CSF will be supporting three disadvantaged students of Black African or Caribbean heritage throughout their undergraduate study. 
  • The scholarship covers the full cost of UK tuition fees as well as a maintenance stipend of £8,000 for each year of the student’s course. The maintenance stipend consists of a £2,000 per annum bursary from Oxford Brookes and an award of £6,000 per annum from CSF. This is to support living costs such as accommodation and food.
  • The scholarship is awarded to UK undergraduate applicants and the first will be awarded to a student with a confirmed offer to commence study in September 2023.

Eligibility

Eligibility criteria

To be considered for the scholarship, you must:

  • identify as belonging to one of the following ethnic heritages: Black/African; Black Caribbean; Mixed - White and Black African; Mixed - White and Black Caribbean; or Other mixed backgrounds (to include Black African, Black Caribbean or Black Other)
  • have a confirmed offer to commence a three-year full-time undergraduate programme from September 2023.
  • must not already hold a degree or equivalent higher-level education.
  • possess a Home fee status, or expect to be assessed as a home student.
  • have been assessed for financial support through your regional funding authority with a verified household income of less than £25,000 per annum. The funding authorities are Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, Student Finance NI and the Student Awards Agency for Scotland.

To apply for the Cowrie Scholarship, please complete an application form. The application deadline for the first award is midnight on Sunday 30 April 2023. Oxford Brookes will inform the successful candidate in July.
