Today, perhaps more than ever, religion is showing its politically ambivalent nature: the war in Ukraine, the rise of aggressive nationalist ideologies in Asia and the West, and the persistence of sectarian conflict across Africa and the Middle East often appears as religiously expressed conflicts. At the same time, however, a new era of interreligious solidarity is developing, globally and locally, as evidenced by the historical Document on Human Fraternity, co-signed by Pope Francis and the Sheikh Al-Tayeb.

These unprecedented interreligious initiatives are scattering seeds of hope for unity in the world and release novel interreligious dynamics that policymakers should take seriously and engage with.

In this lecture, Professor Petito will discuss how these new religious narratives of interreligious solidarity and human fraternity are carrying global hopes for unity and universalism, as well as local engagement for the common good more than other secular political discourses and ideologies.
