Oxford Brookes collaborates with driving charity which helps those with restricted mobility and disabilities gain independence

Oxford Brookes University has partnered with Driving Mobility, a national charity that provides professional assessments and information so that people with restricted mobility and disabilities can drive safely and maintain personal independence.

The University has teamed up with the charity, which is supported by the Department for Transport, to deliver higher education courses in ‘Driving Assessment and Outdoor Mobility’. Approved Driving Instructors and Occupational Therapists will take the course to then be able to assist drivers in safely maintaining their independence.

World class learning opportunities

Victoria Gilbert, Occupational Therapy Placement Lead and Driving Mobility Liaison Manager at Oxford Brookes University, said: “This is an exciting partnership, we’re proud to provide the academic support for the development of staff. Taking university accredited courses demonstrates their commitment to, and expectation of, high levels of expertise and skill within practice.”

Building for the future

Dr Tanya Rihtman, Occupational Therapy Programme Lead at Oxford Brookes added: “Looking to the future, the Oxford Brookes University-Driving Mobility collaboration aims to expand its offer, potentially making modules available to Oxford Brookes University healthcare students. Further, this collaboration has the potential to be developed into a bespoke training offer for North American students who come to study occupational therapy in the UK and subsequently require advanced driving mobility training as a prerequisite to gaining professional registration in their home countries.

“We look forward to the years ahead working collaboratively to successfully run these courses.”

Edward Trewhella, CEO, Driving Mobility commented: “Ensuring all our instructors and clinicians are able to fulfil their roles effectively through the latest education is key.

“As our new educational programme rolls out, we also intend to offer the course to professionals and academics outside of the charity who will benefit from enhanced knowledge regarding mobility.”
