Supporting your learning

The student experience at Brookes is not just about an academic experience. There are many different aspects to the learning experience and ways in which you will be supported. It is a journey which starts in induction week all the way through to graduation.

Support from staff

Once you have enrolled you will be assigned your Academic Adviser. Their role is to offer you help and advice throughout your time here.

Your relationship with your Academic Adviser is an important one as they will work with you throughout your degree, providing you with opportunities to discuss your academic progress, career and personal development opportunities, module choices and any worries you might have about your studies.

PAL (Peer Assisted Learning)

PAL is a student-to-student support service that gives you, as a student, the opportunity to improve your understanding of core modules. It provides the opportunity for the academic and personal development of not just the attendees but also the PAL Leaders as well (Capstick, 2003).

You can become a PAL leader if you do well on a module and have the confidence (after training) to assist your peers in supporting them understand the module.

Module Assistants Scheme

In your second year, you can help module leaders on large modules (over 100 students) in the Business School with the administration of their modules. This includes:

  • Organising materials
  • Assisting with module evaluations
  • Monitoring attendance

Research Assistants Scheme

There may be opportunities for you to work on specific research projects which are on-going with the school. Alongside final year students and programme staff Research Assistants are employed and trained to explore assessment across the course. For example, two half-day programme development workshops have been facilitated by four Student Research Assistants (SRAs) to identify and explore variation in assessment across the programme. Working with the Programme Team and SRAs analysed this data to further understand the combined honours assessment experience and to create processes and materials that clarify variant assessment expectations and requirements.
