Role

Dr Fiona Matley is a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the Centre for Psychological Research (CfPR).  Fiona is currently working as part of the research team for SPACES (Storytelling Promoting Alcohol Choice, Empowerment and Sharing) which is a project looking at novel ways to support mid-life women who would like to reduce their alcohol consumption.

Fiona has previously provided teaching support for the Psychology (BSc(Hons) course at Oxford Brookes University, across several modules including:

  • Psychological Interventions,
  • An Introduction to Psychological Research,  
  • Qualitative Methods in Psychology and 
  • Foundations of Cognitive Psychology.

Research

Fiona is an early career researcher whose work focuses on reducing alcohol consumption, smoking cessation, and supporting healthy ageing.  Fiona’s main research interests involve supporting adults to make positive changes that can enhance their health and wellbeing in mid and later life. Fiona has experience in intervention development and evaluation, patient public involvement, systematic reviews, and qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

My research explores the following topics:

  • Using automatic processes to change drinking behaviour in midlife adults.
  • Knowledge, attitudes and current practice of health professionals regarding the use of e-cigarettes and other smoking cessation interventions in cancer survivors (funded by Cancer Research UK).
  • Evaluating the impact of patient and public involvement (PPI) in the life after prostate cancer diagnosis study (LAPCD).
  • UK teachers’ views on the content and format of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE).
  • Testing social status and family socialization hypotheses of alcohol use in Norwegian young people: a causal mediation analysis.
