Senior Lecturer / Architect - Subject Coordinator for MSc Sustainable Architecture: Evaluation and Design (SAED)

School of Architecture

Role

I was invited to give a guest lecture in 2009, which led to my appointment as an associate lecturer the following year. My passion for teaching and Higher Education led to my current role as the subject coordinator in 2015.  I have been leading the SAED MSc course since then, ensuring changes in line with the evolving nature of sustainability in architecture, policies, and industry needs, as well as my belief in how education can evolve to encourage critical thinking and a constructivist approach in practice. I continue to shape the course through my research on feedback and inclusivity in higher education.

I have led many modules in addition to my role as subject coordinator and have supervised students at different stages of their education, from BA to PhD.

Research

My research interests lie in exploring the impact of climate change on highly efficient construction in the UK. I have also undertaken research on the use of natural ventilation to eliminate overheating in Passivhaus buildings in the UK.

I spend much of my time exploring the inclusivity in architecture and education with a specific focus on dyslexic students.

Research impact

My interest in low-carbon building and sustainability started during my earlier education and has continued to date. My recent research focused on incorporating natural ventilation into Passivhaus buildings to reduce overheating potential. I have also attended a train-the-trainer course on delivering Passivhaus material in Dublin in 2014, and I have strong connections and contacts within the Passivhaus community, both nationally and internationally.

During my professional experience, I have worked on several projects, including one-off residential houses, multi-residential buildings, leisure centres, airports, YMCA buildings, schools, master planning, Eco towns, Passivhaus dwellings, EnerPHit dwellings, and achieving BREEAM Excellent and Code for Sustainable Homes.
