Role
Karen works within the Mental Health Nursing team as part of the Oxford School of
Nursing and Midwifery (OSNM) supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate
programmes. Karen has a background working in suicide prevention (clinically and from
strategic and research perspectives) within the NHS and nationally and is a suicide
awareness resource for Oxford Brookes University staff.

Modules taught
Karen leads the MSc dissertation module and is mental health field lead for the BSc
dissertation module. She teaches on the BSc research awareness module and the
professional doctorate in nursing (DNurs) programme. In addition, she supports the year 2
enhancing the therapeutic relationships module.

Research
Karen’s professional doctorate investigated the experiences and needs of adults in England
who care for an adult family member, partner or friend they consider to be at risk of
suicide. Additional research areas include the experience of ketamine therapy for people
with treatment resistant depression and suicidality; the impact of deaths of patients by
suicide on clinicians; self-harm and suicide among nurses; and the role of religion and
spirituality in bereavement by suicide.
