Sheikh Salman Hassan

Role

Dr Sheikh Salman Hassan is a Lecturer in Computer Science in the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at Oxford Brookes University, specialising in networking, cyber security, and AI-driven system optimisation. His work bridges the gap between fundamental network infrastructure and intelligent security mechanisms, ensuring robust and secure connectivity for next-generation networking systems.

He joined Oxford Brookes University in September 2026. Prior to this, he worked as a Research Associate at Heriot-Watt University within the Institute of Sensors, Signals and Systems (ISSS), focusing on machine learning for intelligent wireless systems. He also held research positions at the Institute for Imaging, Data and Communications (IDCoM), University of Edinburgh, and the Networking Intelligence Lab, Kyung Hee University, South Korea. He holds a PhD in Computer Engineering from Kyung Hee University (2024) and a BS in Electrical Engineering from FAST-NUCES, Pakistan.

Teaching and supervision

Modules taught

Dr Hassan teaches programming, networking fundamentals, and system architecture at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His recent teaching includes COMP4004 Problem Solving and Programming (UG), COMP4009 Foundations of Computer Systems (UG), COMP5043 Switching and Routing Principles (UG), COMP4006 Professional Programming Practice (UG), COMP5044 LAN Techniques (UG), and MATH4004 Mathematics for Computing (UG).

Supervision

He currently supervises three undergraduate final-year projects and welcomes enquiries from prospective MSc and PhD students. He is interested in supervising doctoral researchers in the following areas:
  • Network Security and Cyber Defence
  • Secure Routing and Switching Protocols
  • AI for Network Management and Optimisation
  • Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) Management
  • Federated Learning and Privacy-Preserving AI
  • Internet of Things (IoT) Security

Research

His research develops principled AI and optimisation frameworks to solve complex problems in wireless communications, networking, and cyber security. He draws on deep learning, reinforcement learning, and metaheuristic algorithms to enhance network efficiency, reliability, and security. Current projects include secure AI-native architectures, semantic communication for satellite systems, and resilient networking for critical infrastructure.

He collaborates with researchers across the UK, South Korea, and Europe through various international research networks and is actively involved in industry-facing projects related to secure communications and intelligent transport systems.
