Urania Chiu

Role

Urania Chiu is a socio-legal academic interested in legal discourse with teaching and research expertise in England and Hong Kong. Having previously published on topics across criminal law, medical law, and international human rights law, her current research focuses on judicial constructions of mental disorder and the dis/ordered subject in crime and punishment.

Urania took up the position of Lecturer in Law at Oxford Brookes University in 2026 and teaches on the LLB, GDL, and Foundation Year programmes. Before joining Oxford Brookes Law School, she studied at the London School of Economics, University of Hong Kong, and University of Oxford.

Research

Urania has been researching and writing on topics across criminal law, medical law, and international human rights law since 2017. Drawing on Foucauldian theory, postmodern studies of dis/ability, and critical discourse analysis, her current research examines constructions of mental disorder and the dis/ordered subject in crime and punishment. Her other ongoing projects include doctrinal and socio-legal analyses of the compulsory mental health regime and national security legislation in Hong Kong.

Research impact

Urania's research has been published in leading international journals including the Statute Law Review and the Journal of Criminal Law. Beyond academia, she has been invited to comment on current legal developments by international news outlets, and her work on Hong Kong national security legislation has been cited by the UK Government.
