Dr Wenzhi Zhou
Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering,
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Role
I am a Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, with teaching and research interests in power electronics, motor drives, electric vehicles (EVs), and renewable energy systems.
My expertise spans power electronic systems from the component level through to complete system design and integration. This includes wide bandgap (WBG) power semiconductor characterisation, modelling and packaging, as well as power converter design and control, motor drive systems, and their integration into EVs and renewable energy applications.

Teaching and supervision
I contribute to teaching and student supervision across Electrical, Electronic, Automotive and Electro-Mechanical Engineering, including:
- Automotive Engineering with Electric Vehicles
- Electro-Mechanical Engineering
- Electronic Engineering
Research
My main research interests include:
converter technologies and system level applications, bridging the gap between
component level innovation and practical electrified power and energy systems.
- Wide bandgap power semiconductors — characterisation, modelling, packaging and application of WBG devices
- Power converters — converter design, topologies, control and optimisation
- Motor drive systems — power electronics and control for electrical machines
- Electric vehicles — traction inverters, electric drives, charging technologies and powertrain integration
