“What stood out to me most about Oxford Brookes was its active and engaged Students’ Union.”

“Oxford Brookes consistently ranked highly, particularly for student satisfaction and social activity, which made it my top choice.”

As an international student, I couldn’t visit the university before enrolling, so I relied on thorough research to make an informed decision. That approach gave me confidence in choosing Oxford Brookes.

“My favourite modules have been the practical, creative ones.”

In my first year, I created a magazine and completed documentary-style video assignments, developing skills in video editing and Photoshop. I valued producing tangible projects that demonstrate progress over time. We use industry-standard software and work to professional standards, which mirrors real-world business environments and prepares us for industry expectations.

The course also offers strong industry engagement. We regularly hear from guest speakers, including senior professionals such as the Head of Audiobook Publishing at Penguin Random House, who spoke about market trends, production processes, and marketing strategies. We also attend workshops on internships, journalism careers, and publishing pathways. Weekly newsletters share job opportunities, internships, and industry insights. These connections provide valuable insider knowledge and real pathways into the industry.

“The teaching staff have been exceptional.”

They combine high expectations with genuine support. They are approachable, responsive, and committed to helping students succeed. I have always felt encouraged, respected, and supported in my academic development.

One challenge I faced was time management. I learned that working consistently in small increments is far more effective than leaving tasks until the last minute. Starting assignments early, planning ahead, and aligning work with upcoming lectures has helped me manage deadlines more effectively.

“Alongside my studies, I have served on the committee of the LGBTQ+ Network for three years.”

I have held roles including Publicity Secretary, Vice Chair, and Events Secretary. I manage communications, coordinate events, and ensure smooth day-to-day operations, while also acting as a visible and approachable representative for members. I also serve as a part-time Trans Students’ Officer, where I advocate for inclusive policies and ensure students feel heard and supported. Building community and creating safe, welcoming spaces has been one of the most rewarding parts of my university experience.

“After graduation, I plan to run for Vice President for Liberation and Community at Oxford Brookes Union."

I hope to continue contributing to the university community, either through student leadership or within marketing or publishing roles. Longer term, I am interested in social media marketing, publishing, and content creation, either within the university or with independent publishers in Oxford. Studying at Oxford Brookes has allowed me to grow academically, professionally, and personally in an environment where I feel able to be fully myself.
