Anthropology and Sociology

Ami Bowyer had travelled a lot and had come into contact with various different cultures. These differences had always fascinated her, and that curiosity and interest led her to studying anthropology and sociology.

After choosing the course, one of the main reasons I came to study at Brookes was because as soon as I walked into the university I felt it had a friendly atmosphere which made being away from home a lot easier.

Having an academic advisor is extremely helpful when you are choosing your modules for the semester and the student support coordinators constantly make it clear that they are available if we need them. All members of staff have office hours, which means if you have an issue they are happy for you to pop in. It’s nice to know there is a lot of support there if you did need it.

I think the main thing that anthropology and sociology achieve is that they broaden your mind, encouraging you to be accepting of other cultures and their way of living. You may not always agree with everything about another culture, but the course allows you to develop your ability to empathise and not be judgmental.

I would love to travel more and work with people, possibly within a charity, so who knows where I may end up. However, I genuinely believe that my degree will open doors for me and new opportunities are more likely to be presented with my degree.

Being a well rounded individual is always attractive to employers. If you have the ability to be compassionate and open-minded there is a lot more room for progression within an occupation. If I follow a career dealing with people from other cultures then my studies will enable me to comfortably handle social situations as I will have a greater understanding and acceptance of different cultures and behaviour.

Oxford is a stunning city and I always enjoy going into town. It is very much a student city so it accommodates us very well with nightlife and shops which are very student orientated. Nearly all the shops offer a student discount, which you have to love!
