Catarina De Pina Joana, MSc International Management and International Relations, 2026, Angola, Graduate

“The level of intellectual independence expected from us during the course pushed me to grow in confidence, refine my analytical voice, and approach challenges with a more strategic mindset.”

“Studying in the UK was both demanding and incredibly enriching.”

My classmates were from all over the world and from very different walks of life. This created a vibrant learning environment where perspectives were constantly evolving. I appreciated the strong focus on critical thinking, independent research, and open dialogue.

“The academic advisors were excellent and consistently accessible.”

I felt genuinely supported throughout my studies, particularly during my dissertation, which remains one of the most meaningful academic projects I have undertaken. My dissertation supervisor provided exceptional guidance and encouragement, helping me develop research focused on women street vendors in Angola. The topic was deeply personal and relevant to the development of my country, and the process helped me grow significantly as a researcher and writer. That experience strengthened my confidence and continues to influence my professional and social impact work today.

“Guest speakers and collaborative projects created a dynamic environment.”

Learning extended far beyond textbooks, and there were many networking opportunities throughout the programme. Two experiences stand out in particular. One was a study module in Boston, where we visited global organisations such as Google, Microsoft, New Balance, Meta, and the British Consulate - opportunities I never imagined I would access during my studies. Another highlight was qualifying for the Erasmus+ and Curve Mobility Programme, which allowed me to take an optional module in Seville, Spain, focused on refugee and migration studies. These experiences greatly enriched my academic journey, expanded my global network, and strengthened my professional profile.

“As an international student, I found a sense of belonging among a diverse community.”

One of the most rewarding experiences during my time at the University was working as an International Student Helper, where I supported the induction of new international students arriving in Oxford. It was incredibly meaningful to give back - having once been a student navigating the city myself, and later guiding others through that same journey. Taking students around Oxford, a city I had dreamed of experiencing throughout my academic life,  and helping them feel at home made me realise how much I had grown; in many ways, my experience came full circle.

“Today I work at the intersection of international trade, investment, and social impact.”

My work focuses on strengthening partnerships between countries and supporting sustainable development in Angola and beyond. I previously served as a Trade and Investment Advisor for the British Embassy in Angola and currently collaborate with DMA Invest as Head of Lusophone Markets. I have also taken on a new challenge at Ohuassi Investments as Director for International Business and Investor Relations, while contributing as a writer for Voices of Africa on business, energy and sustainability, education, and career development, promoting inclusive growth across the continent.

The master’s degree at Oxford Brookes provided me with the analytical mindset, global awareness, and leadership confidence to navigate complex international environments. I aim to continue building bridges between policy, business, and community development, contributing to inclusive economic growth and long-term impact across Africa and globally.
