When I arrived in the UK the biggest difference I noticed was how the students were much more actively engaged in their lectures and seminars compared to in Malaysia.
Back home, there is a tendency for lecturers to just stand at the front and talk; but in the UK there is more of an air of debate, with students questioning the lecturers on various points. I really enjoyed this, as I felt like a more active participant in the learning process, and I felt like I learnt a lot from my fellow students this way.
Before I moved I was quite worried about accommodation, but I ended up getting a place in a really nice student hall (Clive Booth) and I loved it! I found the process of applying for accommodation quite simple really. Once you’ve had your place accepted you just have to fill in a few forms to specify your preferences and then the Oxford Brookes accommodation team sort it out from there. I also found them really good at helping me with any enquires or questions I had.
One of the best things about the moving process was how good Oxford Brookes were at providing opportunities for making friends. For instance, the freshers’ week they organised was a great opportunity to meet people in a similar situation to you, and they ran some really fun events. The Law School also did a really good job of organising events to allow us to integrate with the existing Law students, such as organising a giant barbeque night so that we could get to know our fellow students better.
