“Oxford Brookes stood out for its strong reviews and positive reputation.”

“I already knew a few people who had studied here and spoken highly of their experience, which gave me additional confidence in my choice.”

The location was also ideal - close to my home in Stratford-upon-Avon, but far enough away to feel independent. When I attended the Open Day and met the lecturers, I immediately felt at home. The way they spoke about the course, the sense of community, and the atmosphere of the city all confirmed that it was the right place for me.

“My favourite modules have been English 1 , 2 and 3.”

Each year we study core subjects such as English, maths and science, but English has consistently been my highlight. Mathew Tobin’s teaching on the English modules has been particularly inspiring throughout my three years. In my final year, I chose to specialise further by taking a storytelling module, which has had a lasting impact on me both personally and professionally.

I have always been drawn to children’s literature and the power of storytelling. Stories are one of the most effective ways to communicate ideas and connect with young learners. A well-told story stays with you, and I want to bring that into my classroom as a teacher. Studying storytelling has shaped how I think about teaching and how I plan to engage children in learning.

“The lecturers and staff are incredibly supportive and approachable.”

Before university, I wasn’t always confident about asking for help, but here I have felt encouraged to seek guidance whenever I need it. My academic advisor, Steph Flower, has been particularly supportive. Even when a question relates to a different module, staff are always willing to help. That openness has made a real difference to my confidence and academic development.

“One of the biggest challenges at the start was academic writing and managing multiple assignments.”

In my first year, I sometimes left assignments too close to the deadline. Over time, with guidance from staff and by developing better time management strategies, I’ve learned to plan ahead and manage my workload more effectively. I now approach assignments with much more confidence and structure.

“A key strength of the course is the balance between theory and practice.”

In lectures, we explore research, pedagogy and best practice. On placement, I apply what I’ve learned in real classroom settings. This has been the most valuable part of my development. I can test strategies, reflect on what works, adapt where needed, and discuss my experiences with both university tutors and school mentors. That combination of research and hands-on experience has helped me shape my own teaching style. Placements also prepare us realistically for the profession. We take on full teaching responsibilities and experience the realities of the profession. As a result, I feel fully prepared to begin my teaching career.

“After graduation, I plan to complete my Early Career Teacher (ECT) years and focus on becoming the best teacher I can be.”

I’m open to where the profession might take me — whether that’s staying local, moving elsewhere in the UK, or even teaching internationally. The skills and qualifications I’ve gained give me confidence that I have options.

Overall, the course has not only prepared me academically and professionally, but also helped me grow in confidence and clarity about the kind of teacher I want to become.
