Hannah Cooper’s early fascination with the history of the British monarchy developed into a passion for History that she decided to pursue at degree level.
I was attracted to the History course at Brookes for numerous reasons. The lecturers are experts in their fields and are a research-led department, but I also fell in love with Oxford and the university as a whole when visiting on Open Day.
One thing I love about the course is the variety of modules available. Whether you like British, American, Russian, early-modern or modern history, there is something for everybody to enjoy. Furthermore, the lecturers are all so friendly and supportive and no question goes unanswered.
One member of staff I have found particularly helpful throughout my time at Brookes is Professor Joanne Bailey. Not only is Joanne a very supportive, approachable and encouraging lecturer, but Joanne’s feedback has also helped me improve my general approach to writing which I feel has contributed towards my improved grades.
Oxford is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s full of culture so there is always something to do in your spare time. The transport links between the university, halls of residences and city center are also excellent so no matter where you are based, it is easy to get around.
There are numerous societies available at Brookes for all students. I am currently the Social Secretary of the History Society and help to put on numerous academic and social events. This is a great way to meet other History students as well as students from other courses who have a similar enjoyment of the subject.
I think the Brookes course will help with my future careers. As a History student you gain a lot of transferable skills such as research, writing, analysis and time-management. There is also a Careers Tutor within the department who regularly informs us about upcoming career fairs and events.
In the future I hope to have a job which allows me to use my knowledge of history. I am extremely interested in becoming a television researcher for historical documentaries. But I am also hoping to complete a Masters here at Brookes before I go on to this.
I highly recommend Oxford Brookes and the History course to all who are interested. After I didn’t get the grades I was expecting, I didn’t get into my first choice of university, and therefore came to Brookes as my insurance choice. However, I would not change this for the world and honestly could not be happier with where I am studying.
