Javier Moreno Medina, MSc Motorsport Engineering, 2026, Spain, Graduate
“I participated in the Formula Student project, where a group of students work together to design and build a racing car and compete in Formula Student UK. That experience added a lot to my time at the University.”
“I discovered Oxford Brookes because of my passion for motorsport.”
While I was studying my bachelor’s degree in Spain, I found out that Oxford Brookes offered one of the best master’s degrees in the world in motorsport engineering. Also, the strength of the Formula Student team and Oxford Brookes Racing made it feel like the perfect place to study the master’s programme. From that moment, I focused on achieving all the goals I needed in order to join the University.
“I researched the University and the area before I arrived, which helped me to adapt.”
Before coming to the UK I knew there would be cultural and social differences compared to Spain. So, I looked into the things I was curious about, especially what daily life is like for an average student. Fortunately, the University provides online resources that help you prepare before arriving. Once I arrived, the biggest support came from the relationships I built with my classmates. Many of them were also international students, so we supported each other throughout the experience.
“I loved the cultural diversity.”
I knew that the master’s programme had an international reputation and that there would be students from many parts of the world, but it definitely exceeded my expectations - it was amazing! I participated in the Formula Student project, where we worked together to design and build a racing car and compete in Formula Student UK. That experience added a lot to my time at the University.
“My relationships with my professors were very good.”
They were always willing to help and explain things as clearly as possible. With my cohort, it was a fantastic experience to meet so many people from different backgrounds. It enriches you culturally, and I would recommend that anyone who has the opportunity to experience different cultures to fully embrace it.
“The master’s gave me strong technical knowledge in specific engineering areas”.
This included composite materials, electronics, and aerodynamics. However, I believe the biggest lessons came from developing soft skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving under pressure, and adaptability. Working on various projects taught me how to take responsibility, organise my workload, and collaborate with different people.
“Currently, I’m working as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer at Fortescue Zero (previously Williams Advanced Engineering).”
It has been a fantastic first 18 months here, where I’ve learned many things. My main aspiration is to keep growing both personally and professionally, taking on more responsibility over time, and if that growth can be connected to motorsport, even better.
