Jayne Allsop came to Brookes as a mature student to study Sociology and English. She hopes to complete a PGCE once she has graduated.

I chose Brookes not only for its location but for the fact that I could do both of the fields that I wanted to study. I also liked the enthusiasm of the staff members. Brookes offers a great diversity of courses and that there is a lot of support available for students from all university staff. This diversity allows me to gain a better understanding of society, encouraging discussion and allowing for individual opinions. I enjoy the modular programme and the choices that it offers.

I’ve enjoyed all aspects of the course and feel the skills that I have learnt will enable me to gain a good job in the future, and I have learnt not to take research at face value but to question and analyse. I am also a student representative and a guider which allows me to communicate with a wide variety of university staff and inform prospective students of the benefits Oxford Brookes University, through the knowledge I have gained. This has given me increased communication skills which I feel are beneficial for future life. I hope to do a PGCE so that I can teach adults and inspire them to go to university.

I was the treasurer of the mature student society for two years when in my first and second year. I found it quite a challenge and we were able to change its name to the 21+ club to make the society more attractive to the wider student body.

I came to Oxford in 1995 for a job opportunity and have made it my home ever since. I enjoy the diversity that it offers and the fact that you can get to London in less than two hours, allowing you to enjoy a big bustling city without having to live in it. As well as being near the countryside, Oxford has great museums, theatres and art galleries as well as a good night life.

I have found Brookes to be the most supportive learning environment I have ever encountered. I have enjoyed my time at Brookes and will miss it when I leave.
