International Foundation Business and Technology + BSc Quantity Surveying & Commercial Management, 2026, Ghana, Student
“The Foundation course really helped ease me into university life, so I wasn’t feeling overwhelmed when I started my main programme. I was taught key academic skills such as writing, research and referencing.”
“Many of the University’s strengths closely matched what I was looking for.”
Particularly its strong reputation in my chosen industry, practical learning opportunities, industry links and focus on graduate employability. I was also drawn to the university’s supportive environment, modern facilities and its location in Oxford. Altogether, it felt like the right place for me to grow academically, socially and professionally.
“The University provides dedicated support services.”
These offer helpful guidance for international students, which made my move to the UK much smoother than I expected. I initially thought adapting to a different environment would be quite challenging but, over time, I became more comfortable with the UK lifestyle and academic expectations. The support from lecturers and academic advisors was also very valuable, and having access to workshops and peer support helped while I was adjusting.
“My Foundation course played a huge role in preparing me for my Bachelor’s degree.”
The course really helped ease me into university life, so I wasn’t feeling overwhelmed when I started my main programme. I was taught key academic skills such as writing, research and referencing. I was also given helpful guidance on the university’s coursework requirements and how to make the most of its resources, while the course itself encouraged independent learning and strengthened my time management skills. With these skills in place, I have been able to work to the best of my ability while confidently managing my workload and engaging with more advanced material in my degree.
“The Bachelor’s degree focuses on hands-on learning.”
We’ve engaged in site visits and learned about sustainability, current industry practices, and the latest technologies and software, which has helped me understand what’s expected in the professional world. Being involved in real-world case studies and learning from lecturers with industry experience has helped me connect academic theory with practical construction and building services knowledge.
“Oxford has a unique atmosphere, beautiful architecture and a vibrant community.”
I’ve really enjoyed living and studying in Oxford; it’s a very safe city. Being surrounded by historic buildings and libraries is inspiring, and at the same time there are modern facilities, green spaces and quiet areas that are perfect for studying. In my spare time I enjoy exploring the city, trying different cafés, spending time with friends and visiting parks. Oxford’s strong student presence makes it both lively and academically motivating, which makes it an ideal place to live and study.
“I aim to build a successful career in the construction and building services industry.”
I would like to gain as much professional experience as possible, work towards relevant industry certifications and continue developing my expertise in sustainable design and environmental performance. My ambition is to successfully run a construction company back home in Ghana that contributes to projects promoting energy efficiency and sustainability. Ultimately, I hope to combine technical knowledge with practical experience to make a meaningful impact in the built environment sector wherever I find myself.
