BSc Adult Nursing (Swindon)

Oxford Brookes was always my first choice for Adult Nursing.

From the moment I attended the open day at the Swindon Campus, I knew this was the right place for me. The campus felt welcoming—not too big, but with all the necessary facilities, making it a comfortable learning environment. What really gave me confidence in my decision was the university’s strong reputation in nursing. The teaching staff stood out as experienced professionals, many of whom have worked together and published research. Knowing that I would be learning from experts in the field reassured me that I was getting the best possible education and support.

Certain modules really stood out for me.

While I found all the modules interesting, I particularly enjoyed Adult Health and Wellbeing and Assessing and Planning Adult Nursing Care. In Adult Health and Wellbeing, we studied a specific neighbourhood and researched a prevalent health condition in the area. Using statistics and research, we explored the social and economic factors influencing health outcomes, which deepened my understanding of holistic patient care. The Assessing and Planning Adult Nursing Care module gave me a better grasp of nursing diagnoses and patient care planning, teaching me how to identify symptoms, take patient histories, and make informed clinical decisions.

The lecturers are incredibly supportive.

They’re always available, whether through email, online meetings, or face-to-face support. Regular academic advisor group meetings also provide a great space to check in on how we’re managing our studies alongside work and personal life. These sessions help us bond as a group and share any concerns or challenges we’re facing.

The library and academic resources have been invaluable.

I regularly use the library after lectures - it’s a great study space with quiet rooms and meeting areas where I often have group study sessions before exams. The librarians are always willing to help, whether it’s finding the right resources or teaching us how to navigate databases for research. We also have the option to order books from other campuses, which has been really helpful when certain materials weren’t available on-site.

Managing placement, assignments, and exams at the same time was a challenge

but I found a way through. During my first year, I had a placement, an assignment, and an exam all happening around the same time, which was stressful. I spoke with my academic advisor and friends, and we worked out a plan. I created a study group where we dedicated one day a week solely to exam prep, while balancing placement and assignments on other days. My academic advisor also reminded me of the importance of self-care and taking time for myself, which helped me manage stress. With support from my peers and tutors, I was able to stay on top of everything and complete my work to a high standard.

The course has broadened my career opportunities.

Through placements in different specialties, I’ve gained hands-on experience and developed a wide range of skills. The course has highlighted the many career pathways available in nursing, both in and outside of hospitals. It also reinforced the importance of strong communication skills, professional values, and teamwork - particularly in multidisciplinary teams working together to ensure safe patient care and discharge.
