It was taking part in the Brookes Law Summer School that confirmed Kimberly’s decision to study Law.
During my final A-level year I was undecided between studying Psychology or Law at University. I’d already completed Psychology-related work experience, so I was on the lookout to gain experience related to Law. I was part of the Brookes Engage programme (an outreach initiative run by the University designed to help young people transition into the world of work) and through this I found out about the Summer School run by the Law department. I applied for a place and was accepted.
The early part of the summer school was content based – I learnt about the Theft Act and court systems. It showed me how University lectures are taught and hearing the law staff speak so passionately about their subject made me want to learn more.

We were given information to memorise about a character, so that we could recount it when questioned in court. It was a helpful exercise as I gained insight into how Barristers work in court scenarios. It gave me the confidence to think on my feet and to summarize information in clear and concise ways.
I am now in the first year of my Law degree at Oxford Brookes and I’m thoroughly enjoying the course. I had thought I’d be more interested in criminal aspects of Law. Now I am here, I am beginning to favour the commercial aspects of Law. In the future I think I would like to be a commercial solicitor and I will use my degree to pursue my chosen career.
