MA International Relations (Distance Learning)
I hadn’t originally planned to study at Oxford Brookes,
but circumstances led me here in an unexpected way. At the time, I was working full-time in international cooperation, focusing on a specific region. Pursuing a master’s in International Relations had always been in the back of my mind, but it never felt like the right time—until Covid happened. With borders closed and 60 days of confinement, I decided to use my time productively and finally take the leap. Oxford Brookes offered the perfect opportunity to study online while continuing to work, making it an ideal fit.
Balancing work and study was one of my biggest concerns,
but the support from tutors made a huge difference. They were incredibly generous with their time, always available to answer questions and provide guidance—especially when it came to writing my thesis. Their support was invaluable throughout the course.
Since this was during Covid,
My classmates were all sitting in small rooms around the world. Despite the physical distance, we formed an online study group and regularly met to discuss topics, which helped maintain a sense of collaboration. We also worked on group projects together, which was a great way to stay engaged. Especially, while studying international relations, it was motivating and interesting to be a part of a global group of students from different continents.
The course broadened my perspective
and provided practical tools I could apply directly to my work. Today, I’m part of the world’s largest humanitarian network, connecting the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies globally. The insights I gained at Oxford Brookes have strengthened my ability to drive collaboration in complex international settings. I also developed strong time-management skills—essential for balancing work, study, and personal commitments. Ultimately, the experience helped me secure a new job, so I’m very glad I took the leap.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely.
While I wouldn’t recommend being stuck in confinement, I’d highly recommend the course! And if you get the chance, I’d also encourage attending graduation in Oxford—I brought my family with me, and it was a fantastic experience. Studying in person would have been great for the social aspects, but online learning made it possible to balance my studies with my work and family life.
