I chose Brookes because the university had a good reputation, and is located in Oxford, but is less austere and class oriented than the Oxford City colleges. Before that I had taken an access course in media studies, and courses in Japanese language, art and illustration. I was particularly attracted by the opportunity to specialise in Japanese language and anthropology through the modular programme.
Oxford is a marvelous city, rich in history and humbling architectureéthere is lots to do and see. I was also drawn by the links between the city and the authors JRR Tolkein, C.S.Lewis, and Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). It is the University city, the epicentre of studying – whatever your motivation there is a sense of obligation to do well, to prove your mettle.
Travelling is something I’m keen to do more often, and illustration. I take my art very seriously and hope to author a children’s book like those that inflamed my imagination when I was young. I know anthropology is a respected degree, so it’s a stepping stone to broader horizons.
I think the dedication and perseverance that a university degree demands, plus transferable skills intrinsic to many individual modules will impress employers. References from professors also count for a lot.
I have been inspired and helped by lecturers such as Mitch Sedgwick, Paola Esposito, Chris McDonaough, John Lebreglio, as well as a number of friends, who have provided support and enthusiasm for my ideas. Rob and Mandy, the student support coordinators have made sure that the support mechanisms are in place whenever assistance is required.
