Lavinia Ascanio

LLB Law with Criminology, 2026, Italy, Student

“I'm taking part in the mooting competition, which is something I'm really interested in because I want to be a barrister eventually. I feel it's really enhancing my public speaking skills, and enabling me to learn how to research cases and read judgments.”

“I knew I wanted to come to the UK, and I’ve got no regrets!”

Studying here is very different from university in Italy as it’s a bit more full-on there. When I arrived in the UK, I could find a balance between socialising with my friends, and having a job on the side, which is really useful. The professors are very open and available to me, which is something that is not as common in Italy.

“I was very happy and excited to be here.”

However, it was all new and my family were quite far away, so at first I felt a bit homesick. When I arrived, there were a lot of activities that helped, and such a large community that in my free time I didn’t have to just stay at home, I could be doing something else. I also made quite a few friends, which was really nice.

“I'm very happy with the course.”

I was interested in law, and then I found out it was possible to study Law with Criminology, which is not an option in Italy. I really enjoy the course itself, and also the activities part of the LawID employability programme that go alongside it, which equip you really well.

For example, I'm taking part in the mooting competition, which is something I'm really interested in because I want to be a barrister eventually. I feel it's really enhancing my public speaking skills, and enabling me to learn how to research cases and read judgments. Last year, I joined the CLOCK project, which allowed me to go to court and speak with litigants in person and learn how to interview people, which is something I would possibly be doing later on as a barrister. There are also talks or events you can join, and I feel all of this builds up your skills. Next year I want to do a course to prepare for the bar exam for barristers.

Overall, the course has many opportunities to build transferrable skills and experience which can lead anywhere, either within law or other career paths in business or elsewhere. My personal goal is to do a course to prepare for the bar exam next year, as I plan on becoming a barrister.

“There’s a lot of support for international students.”

If you need help with something or you have doubts about your visa or how to work in the UK, there's always someone here who is happy to help you. In my free time I hang out with my friends and there's lots of parks and coffee shops. There’s a lot you can do. It's a very student-friendly city, very walkable and well-connected.
