MA International Business and Intercultural Communication, 2014

“I really liked the hands-on approach to studying, for example we used case studies, rather than having an excessive amount of exams. This course’s approach to studying and assessment are mainly via individual and group projects and presentations because the aim of this postgraduate degree is to prepare students for graduate jobs”

The MA International Business, Culture and Languages is a course to do if you are interested in getting not only an academic education but also practical work experience.

After being awarded a first class honours degree in Business with Spanish at Oxford Brookes, I completed an MSc in International Management at King’s College London. While I enjoyed my studies in London, the focus was on testing students’ knowledge of theories via exams and I missed the practical approach to studying which suited my learning style. Therefore I decided to come back and study the MA in International Business, Culture and Languages at Oxford Brookes.

It is a very well thought-through course. In the first semester you study different subjects (Principles of Business, International Management, EU Policies and Institutions and Intercultural Communication) while in the second semester you gain work experience by completing an internship. It is a perfect combination!

I really liked the hands-on approach to studying, for example we used case studies, rather than having an excessive amount of exams. This course’s approach to studying and assessment are mainly via individual and group projects and presentations because the aim of this postgraduate degree is to prepare students for graduate jobs. I believe this is a distinguishing characteristic of Brookes’ students.

I couldn’t recommend undertaking a placement highly enough. My spring internship at Cancer Research UK was an absolutely amazing opportunity to apply my knowledge to the non-profit sector and I am grateful that I was able to work on a project that made a difference. During this year I gained invaluable knowledge, work experience and transferable skills which I am now able to take forward and use in my current role at Harley-Davidson Financial Services. It was time well-spent.

I really appreciate the level of support we get from the module leaders. This is especially the case during the second semester as you need to complete the Business Research module via distance learning while doing your internship. We were all able to get in touch with Irène Hill, the module leader, anytime either in person, via e-mail or on Skype. She was extremely accommodating and understanding.

I was very happy to come back to Oxford after living in London for a year as it is smaller yet very conveniently located. Oxford itself is picturesque and there is plenty to see and do! It seems to be full of studious people, which is very inspiring.

My MA at Brookes is exactly what I expected it to be and more!
