Marc Batt, studying Sociology and History, hopes to pursue a career in teaching or human resources once he has completed his degree.

I enjoyed studying sociology at A-Level and wanted to pursue my interest in the subject. The offer I received from Brookes was good and I was very much encouraged by the tutors I spoke to before I arrived. The advantage of choosing which modules I wanted to study was also very inviting.

I was really looking at studying in a city university, but didn’t want to go somewhere as big as London or Manchester. Brookes is great because although it’s in Oxford, much of my studying is in the same place on campus.

I enjoy both the lectures and seminars. My favourite part is taking the information we have learnt in the lectures into a seminar discussion, as it lets us debate our view upon a sociological topic. The skills of critical assessment of statistics and problem solving are both key in the job market, and the overall skills gained from studying sociology with history are invaluable.

I like the lifestyle at Brookes as there is a great sense of independence whilst also feeling part of a community within residential halls. I’m a member of the History Society – they’re a great group of people and we have a lot of fun out and about in Oxford.

It’s fantastic at Brookes! I would recommend sociology and history at Brookes to anybody who is interested in studying them.
