“I thought the foundation year might not be necessary, but once I started, I realised it was exactly what I needed.”

“I was worried I wouldn’t fit in after being away from education for so long.”

Before coming to Oxford Brookes, returning to study felt like a big step for me. I was unsure whether I would adjust to being back in an academic environment, and even simple things like understanding accents and teaching styles were on my mind.

However, once I arrived, my experience was completely different from what I expected. The lecturers were approachable, supportive and easy to talk to. There were no barriers to asking questions, and I quickly realised that I was in an environment where I could learn and grow with confidence.

“Moving to the UK was intimidating at first, but I wasn’t alone in that experience.”

Arriving in a new country was a challenge. Everything was unfamiliar, like navigating transport and settling into daily life. What helped most was the support around me. My academic advisor was always available to check in with and answer questions, while also offering  guidance, not just academically but in everyday situations as well.

I also found comfort in knowing that many other students were going through the same experience. We built friendships early on, supporting each other as we adjusted and even getting lost together on our first days. Those shared experiences helped create a strong sense of community.

“Being part of such a diverse environment helped me see things from completely different perspectives.”

One of the things I enjoy most about studying at Oxford Brookes is the diversity of the student community. I have met people from many different countries and backgrounds, which has broadened my outlook and helped me understand how different experiences shape the way people think. Oxford itself is a calm and student friendly city, with beautiful architecture and a relaxed pace compared to larger cities.

“The foundation year helped me develop skills I didn’t realise I needed.”

Although I initially questioned the need for a foundation year, it became clear very quickly how valuable it was. It helped me build essential academic skills such as critical thinking, referencing and academic writing, which I had not previously developed. It also gave me confidence in speaking, working in teams and approaching assignments in a structured way.

Now, I feel much prepared for my degree. My confidence has really grown, both academically and personally, and I’m able to approach challenges with an open mindset.

“Oxford Brookes has helped me become more confident, resilient and willing to try new things.”

Through my studies, I have developed my skills in communication, research, report writing and creativity. I have also become willing to step outside of my comfort zone. Managing deadlines and assessments has strengthened my resilience and helped me stay focused, even during demanding periods.

Looking ahead, I hope to stay in the UK and gain experience in a professional environment related to my course. I am particularly interested in exploring areas such as marketing and sustainability, and I’m open to seeing where these opportunities lead me.

Overall, my journey at Oxford Brookes has helped me grow in confidence and independence, and has given me the foundation I need to move forward in my career.
