After working as a translator and editor for the World Health Organisation, Olga decided to combine her linguistic skills with legal knowledge to further her professional development.
I decided to do this course, as working as a translator and editor for the World Health Organisation made me realise that a lot of work carried out by the United Nations is mostly legal. I also realised that the combination of a linguistic background and recently gained legal knowledge would be invaluable for further professional and personal development. I also believe that law is a fascinating and mind broadening subject that helps to create a universal understanding of the world around us.
I was impressed by the content of the programme at Oxford Brookes. The syllabus allows students enough time to get used to the expected way of reasoning on a range of broad legal concepts. Whilst the second semester is more oriented towards specialised legal fields that allow students to gain insight into how these operate.
Upon arrival I was even more impressed with the quality of teaching and the way the curriculum was organised. Lectures were supported by seminars that allowed students to express their thoughts, thus testing overall comprehension and legal reasoning skills.
Oxford is known for its academic excellence, which means that there are many public workshops and seminars here. As a student, you can always find an interesting public lecture that could be useful, either in your assignment or in general to create a more rounded perception of the legal area you are interested in.
In the future I hope to further develop my legal research skills and gain enhanced knowledge of International Law in order to pursue a career in legal research. I think that overall an LLM is a unique opportunity to develop skills that could be applied in other related areas.
Without doubt, organisational and time-management skills as well as presentation and communication skills gained whilst doing my LLM will differentiate me from other candidates. Most importantly the course provides hands-on training on how to process vast amounts of information in a rather limited time frame and produce findings that are relevant and feasible.
I found the Career Service at Oxford Brookes to be a true inspiration! They organise useful workshops that are designed especially for current students.
Oxford Brookes University has a special feel about it. It is one of those rare places where as a student you are mostly appreciated for your hard work, enthusiasm and ability to formulate thoughts. In other words it is a genuine alma mater for students striving for academic development and aiming to gain high results. It is also a place where you would feel at home because librarians and administrative assistants are always approachable, helpful and friendly.
